Something's Fishy!!

The 4th graders took a dive into ichthyology to learn all about marine fish! After we went over the scientific classification system of the Animal Kingdom, the students participated in a Fish Kits activity! They learned about the different body types, fins, and anatomy of fish! The students were then given "kits" with a clue card, modeling clay, google eyes, and fin cut-outs to try and reconstruct the mystery fish from the clue card. We then looked at pictures of the fish and tried to match them to our creations!

To finish the day off, the 4th grade learned a song about the fins of a fish! Check it out!!

Please press play!

Trinity, Marleigh, and Kaley were excited to find out what fish they had!

Connor, Kaleb, and Tyrun are working hard on their fish!

Jeremia wonders what fish he is making!

Laci and Hannah wonder where the dorsal fins go.

Laci wants to know if this is the pectoral fin!

Kaleb, Tyrun, and Ryan think they may have it figured out!

Trinity is working hard, while Marleigh thinks she is done!

Jeremia says he is finished!

What fish will we make?

Look what Connor, Kaleb, Tyrun, and Ryan made!

What a cool shark, Jeremia!

Kaley isn't sure if hers looks like the picture!

Searching for Clues!!

The 5th grade CCATS students have been hard at work studying criminology and forensic science. What better way to connect to the real world than with a tour of the Police Department??

We also saw the Emergency Management Service

The students were great listeners!

I could keep up with them in all the orange!

Thank you to the Valley Police Department/EMS for the tour!

Dive Team!!

The Chambers County Sheriff's Department's Dive Team came to Huguley Elementary to treat our 4th graders who are studying oceanography! Major Stewart and Captain Fuller explained what they do and how they are certified for the dive team. The Dive Team went over the equipment that is used on various dives in fresh and salt water. Major Stewart and Captain Fuller gave a PowerPoint presentation that included videos and pictures of some of their many dives. They discussed Boyle's Law, neutral buoyancy, and pressure with the students. The students were able to ask questions and get a close up look at some of the gear!

The students learned about underwater slates for taking notes!

They listened intently!

The dive trailer was set up with all the equipment used for dives!

Captain Fuller discussed how they are able to communicate with their specialized masks!

The breathing regulators are very important!

The main gear was presented outside of the trailer for the students!

The students were very interested!

They inched closer and closer!

Major Stewart was amused by Captain Fuller!

Time to put Major Stewart to work!

This dry suit keeps them warm and dry even in freezing temperatures!

The students had a lot of questions!

They explained how the suit has regulators!

This suit was used last February to dive during the snow we received that month!

They wanted in the trailer!

Some of what is found on dives was explained!
Including this!

Major Stewart did a great job presenting!

They showed a PowerPoint presentation!

All of the 4th graders were very interested in diving!

That's a big fish Major Stewart is talking about!

More questions!

The underwater pictures were really cool!

Even more questions!

I think we may have some future divers!

Captain Fuller did a great job manning the computer!

I think they would have asked one hundred more questions if we let them!

Georgia Aquarium!!

WOW!! What a fantastic trip the 4th graders had to the Georgia Aquarium! We spent the morning exploring the Cold Water Quest, Georgia Explorer, Ocean Voyager, River Scout, Tropical Diver, and Sea Monsters Revealed on our own. After a quick bite, we then went on a behind-the-scenes tour above the main tanks to learn even more about our marine friends! We ended with a 4-D movie with Deepo that taught us about taking care of the ocean. If you have more pics, please e-mail them to me!
